Roaring 20’s Gatsby Themed 30th Birthday Party

October 2020

Kissing my 20’s Goodbye!

For my 30th birthday, I threw a 20’s Gatsby themed party. All of my guests came dressed in their best 20’s garb and ready to celebrate. I purchased my dress on Facebook Marketplace. However, my accessories and my family’s costumes were purchased on Amazon.

When guests walked in, they saw a kissing my 20’s Goodbye sign in a 11×14 gold frame. Also, I had a champagne bottle balloon, a champagne glass balloon, and some regular black, gold, and clear balloons. I purchased the sign on Etsy and printed it at Staples. The frame (https://amzn.to/2Oc0G84) and balloons (https://amzn.to/3bPpzyP, https://amzn.to/2NE0m2p) were bought on Amazon. The pictures below were my inspiration from Pinterest. However, I did not get a picture of my actual entry display.

Next, guests came to my Gifts Table. I purchased the bottles at Michaels and Hobby Lobby. I spray painted them gold with spray paint from Home Depot. The cigar box was from Michaels, and the decorative books were from eBay. The feathers (https://amzn.to/37SfVdG, https://amzn.to/37XlJma), votives (https://amzn.to/2PkJDS7), 8×10 frame (https://amzn.to/3szeOrc), coupe glass (https://amzn.to/3uGWhuX), the typewriter pen holder (https://amzn.to/3sExc1T), “The Great Gatsby” (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0743273567/ref=as_glm?linkCode=ml2&tag=ashleighmarie-20) and pearls (https://amzn.to/3dPNYa5) were from Amazon. I put a picture of my siblings and I in the typewriter pen holder for a personal touch.

Next, we will look at the food table. We catered from Zito’s Pizza in Anaheim Hills. We got their salad and various large pizzas. The cups, Table Cloth, and plates were purchased from party city. We chose to use a plastic table cloth because this area could get messy. The gold utensils were purchased on Amazon (https://amzn.to/37Sh1WQ).

Catered Zito’s

My favorite Table, and the centerpiece for the party was my dessert table. my cake was purchased from Cinderella Cakes and the Cake topper was purchased from Etsy. I also bought some edible gold sparkles from a random website that sold it. A friend made the cake pops, and my mother made “slutty” brownies. These brownies have a Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookie bottom with Oreos in the middle and Ghirardelli brownie on top. Lastly, I bought carrot cake cupcakes and pumpkin swirl cake from my local grocery store. The dessert items were placed on dishes bought from Home Goods. The backdrop (https://amzn.to/3b2oRit), backdrop frame (https://amzn.to/3uHGkVo), and sequin table cloth (https://amzn.to/2NCBKqJ) were purchased on Amazon. The backdrop is a bit expensive, but it is definitely worth it. I have used it at all my parties for backdrops for photobooths, or behind dessert tables like this party. The white boa I tapped to the table cloth was purchased at Michaels.

Dessert Table

I did not have too many party games at this party, so I chose to create a cocktail recipe book so that my guests could make their own cocktails. This led to fun, new, and exciting drinks for everyone. The games guests could play were corn-hole, ping-pong, and beer pong. All great games to play while consuming alcohol. This was also my first time drinking after being pregnant and giving birth. Needless to say, I got a bit drunk. Thanks to my hubby for making sure I was safe on this glorious 30th birthday.

“Prohibition Ends Here”

I purchased most of the alcohol on Total Wine, and was gifted some by friends and family. However, I did purchase some of the syrups (https://amzn.to/3b34odw, https://amzn.to/3r8O8xe) on Amazon. The bar cart ( https://amzn.to/3bNEv0o) and two of the glass decanters (https://amzn.to/37UsVz8, https://amzn.to/3r3YMFd) were purchased on Amazon. The remaining decanter, shakers, and other drink making items were purchased on Mercari and Poshmark. The sign that says “Prohibition Ends Here” was purchased on Etsy and the frame (https://amzn.to/3szeOrc) was purchased on Amazon. See above for information about the spray painted bottles. To make the champagne tower, I used plastic coupe glasses purchased from Party City, tealights purchased from Target, and pearls (https://amzn.to/3dPNYa5) purchased from Amazon. I hot glued the cups to one another and draped random strings of pearls throughout. I chose this plastic option so that there would be no risk of broken glasses.

Because no party is complete without a photo area, I created a section where my friends and family could take pictures together. I tied the numbers 3 and 0 to the swing because I did indeed turn thirty (to my dismay). I bought the balloons at Target. I also created the gold tinsel backdrop for photos as well. I bought the gold tinsel backdrop (https://amzn.to/3ksfJXy) on Amazon. It had tape at the top, so I just had to stick it to the wall. I then tied a few balloons at various heights with the tinsel itself to keep the balloons in place. The balloons (https://amzn.to/3bPpzyP) were also purchased on Amazon.

The tables where guests sat had tables cloths from the Tablecloth Factory. The centerpieces included pearls (https://amzn.to/3dPNYa5), the feathers (https://amzn.to/37SfVdG, https://amzn.to/37XlJma), votives (https://amzn.to/2PkJDS7), and coupe glass (https://amzn.to/3uGWhuX) bought from Amazon. Also included in the centerpieces were the gold spray painted crown royal bottles, wine bottles, and mini frames bought off Etsy and Michaels. In the frames, I put black and white photos of myself when I was a baby. The plates, plastic coupe glasses, cups, and napkins were purchased at Party City. The gold utensils (https://amzn.to/37Sh1WQ) were purchased on Amazon. Lastly, the favor was a rolo wrapped in paper that made it look like a cigar. It said “Ashleigh’s 30th Birthday” on the printed seal. The template for the cigar wrapper was purchased on Etsy.

Lastly, I had some decor pieces incorporated throughout the tables that you can see below. In the first picture, the globe was purchased at Walmart. I used a paint pen to make it gold instead of the orange color it had before. The old fashioned clock was purchased at Home Depot, and the decorative books were purchased on eBay. In the second picture, We have the books purchased from eBay, the bottle purchased from Hobby Lobby, the feathers (https://amzn.to/37SfVdG, https://amzn.to/37XlJma) and votives (https://amzn.to/2PkJDS7) purchased from Amazon, and lastly a gramophone jewelry box (https://amzn.to/3aYZGgz) purchased on Amazon. In the third picture, we have an old fashioned phone purchased on Offer Up, a sign purchased from Etsy, and a frame (https://amzn.to/3szeOrc) from Amazon that reads “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody”.

This party was extremely fun to style and put together. I had so much fun dressing up with my friends and family to celebrate my 30th birthday! I know I will never turn thirty again, but to all my friends and readers turning 30 soon, use my pictures and amazon links to throw yourself a dapper and glamorous 20’s Gatsby themed Party!

Infant Valentine’s Day Photoshoot

For Quincy’s Valentine’s Day photos, I choose to put her in a “Daddy is my Valentine” onesie with red sequined shorts that I bought on Amazon (https://amzn.to/2ZZGjhj). I got the red headband in a pack of 4 Christmas headbands on sale for less than $2 at Marshall’s.

For this photo, my daughter is lying on my bed which has a navy comforter. I placed artificial red flower petals I bought from Party City behind her head. I used a red lipstick I got from a Halloween store, and I re-applied the lipstick before every kiss. To take the photo, I stood over her and made silly noises to get her to smile.

This image took a little longer to achieve. My daughter was 7 months at the time. She could sit up but loved to fall backwards, so there was a lot of repositioning. Also, she wanted to constantly grab the artificial petals and mess up the heart. Be patient if you are trying to get this shot. I chose to do this photo on the bed so that when she fell she would fall on a fluffy mattress. I put the artificial rose petals in a heart shape and gave Quincy artificial roses to hold.

The last image I took was this image of Quincy lying down in the heart. This was much easier to achieve. I used the same artificial rose and rose petals as the previous photo, and I just positioned her on her back. I used the same technique of almost standing over her on the bed and making silly noises to get her to smile.

For Quincy’s 7 month (February 11th) photos, I chose to do a Valentine’s Day theme as well. Her pink heart outfit was purchased at Marshalls. For this photo, I put a pink muslin blanket down and conversation hearts. I then placed Quincy on her back on top of them. I kneeled over her to get this close up shot. My trick to get her to smile in these was to sing her favorite song “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana.

This photo was a two person job. I had a glass bowl given to me by my grandma that was used in this photo. You can probably easily find one similar to it at Home Goods. I got the conversation hearts from Target. We place the bowl close to the wall so that Quincy could lean against the wall a bit for balance. However, she also like to lean forward and to the sides and put her hands on the ground. My mom made sure that Quincy would not fall over or hurt herself while I took the photos while sitting on the floor.

For this photo, I put the pink muslin blanket on the floor in a heart shape. I then placed her on her back on the blanket. She loved to kick the blanket and grab it, so I spent a lot of time fixing the prop. To get the photo, I stood over her like in the previous photos being careful not to get my feet in the picture.

This is the final photo I took of Quincy for her 7 month (February) photos. I got the milestone fleece blanket off of Etsy. I made the the ring that’s around the 7 with a wooden sewing hoop, artificial eucalyptus, and plant wire. These were taken by standing over her, and I made her smile with high pitch trilling noises (like a vocal warm-up).

Overall, I was extremely happy with how these photos turned out. Tune in next month for her 8 month and Saint Patrick’s Day Photos!

Disney Animal Kingdom November 2020

For our third anniversary, my husband and I were supposed to go to Seattle and Portland. However, the pandemic threw a wrench in our plans. We still wanted to travel and celebrate, so we asked ourselves what state is open and won’t shut down. Florida is the state that came to mind. Therefore, two weeks in advance, we were planning a Disney World trip.

I first checked to see if our desired parks were available for reservations. My husband and I wanted to go to Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom because Magic Kingdom is very similar to Disneyland. Also, we knew that the rides at Epcot were not as thrilling, and Epcot is more about the food and drinks. Therefore, we came to the conclusion of Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom for our reservations. We bought our airplane tickets and hotel through Expedia, and a few short weeks later we were flying out of LAX to Orlando.

We arrived in Orlando late on a Thursday Night. We ate at Cafe Tu-Tu Tango, which was delicious, and then went to sleep. Our plan for the weekend was Hollywood Studios Friday, Animal Kingdom Saturday, Universal Studios Sunday, and fly home Monday. In this post I will only be talking about our day in Animal Kingdom:

Since we did not rent a car or stay on Disney Property, we ubered to animal kingdom. The Uber is able to drive you right up to the entrance. We got there pretty close to opening and went straight to Creature Comforts for some breakfast and coffee. Immediately after, we headed to Pandora to ride Flight of Passage and Navii River Journey. Flight of Passage is a must ride, but it was not my husband and my favorite. We felt a bit nauseous after the ride like we do with many 4d rides. The feeling of flying on a ikran (dragon-like creature) was really unique, and I am sure kids would love it, but for our old selves we felt a little sick after. Our favorite ride of the whole day was Navii River Journey. It was relaxing, beautiful, and had cool animatronics. Then, we got a snack from Pongu Pongu. We shared the Mo’ara Margarita drink and Lumpia. I loved my alcoholic beverage with Boba. It was both pretty and delicious. However, I only liked the lumpia, and it was just okay. It has cream cheese and pineapple. I think it is the pineapple that threw me off because I loved the cream cheese and the pastry outside. Normally, I like sweet, but it was a little too sweet for me.

Next, we headed to Africa to get on Kilimanjaro Safaris. This might have been our favorite activity of the day. My husband loved seeing all the animals and feeling like you were on an actual safari. We were able to see lions, hippos, giraffes, rhinos, and more! We went in the morning/afternoon, so the animals were still out because it was still cool. A suggestion I have often heard is to go to first thing so that you can see all the animals before they get too hot and hide in the shade. After the safari, we went on one of the walking trails called Gorilla Falls. There were gorillas and other various animals to see along the way. My husband was very nervous around the gorillas and was convinced they could jump and get you (totally false).

After our time in Africa, we headed to Asia to ride Expedition Everest. This roller coaster reminds me of Matterhorn in Disneyland because they both have snow monsters and a snowy mountain, but this is where the similarities end. This ride is much more thrilling than the Disneyland bobsled ride. It is fast, has drops, has a section where you are going backwards, and has a scary Yeti. This is definitely a ride for thrill seekers!

At this point, we were hungry and decided to stop at Flame Tree BBQ. My husband and I both got pulled pork sandwiches with onion rings. I also got a cider beer with cinnamon whiskey and a gummy worm garnish. We both really enjoyed our food, but one tip I have is get a second pack if BBQ sauce. You are going to need it! Another tip is to sit close to the water. You will be able to see boats and characters go by. When we were eating, we were able to see and wave at Pocahontas.

Our next point of interest was DinoLand USA. We went there solely to ride Dinosaur. This ride is like Indiana Jones in Disneyland, but with dinosaurs. Considering Indians Jones is my favorite ride in Disneyland, this was one of my favorite rides in Animal Kingdom. It is a great ride for thrill seekers.

Once we finished this ride, we decided we wanted to go on the Maharajah Trail, but when we got there, they were closed so the animals could sleep. As such, one of my tips is to see all the animals in the morning so that you do not miss out. After this setback, we decided to go to Pandora because it was getting dark. We were able to see all the beautiful lights, and decided to ride Navii River one more time. After that ride, we went to see the tree of life lit up before the park closed. Animal Kingdom closes the earliest out of all the parks, so it is important to start your day off there early. Also, you will probably stay there all the way until closing.

While walking out of the park, we called an Uber. They were there within 5 minutes. We got to our hotel and fell asleep almost instantly. The nap turned into a longer sleep, so we ended up canceling our reservation at the City Walk and just ate some snacks because we were so exhausted from our two full days at Disney. This concluded the Disney portion of our trip. The next Dat we planned to go to Universal Studios and islands of Adventure. It was time to switch gears from Disney to Harry Potter. We loved our time at Disneyworkd this November. It was my husbands first time to Disney World and Orlando. Therefore, it was a very special anniversary trip that we will never forget!

English Teacher: March Bulletin Board

When I first started teaching, my administrators did not make me change my outside board. However, with the start of the new Year, they began wanting us to change our outside boards monthly. Here is my board for the month of March:

There are a few items that never change on ny board, including: Mrs. Reyes’ Class, my fabric backgrounds, my borders, my Harry Potter images, My schedule, and the ESLO’s. I choose the fabric backgrounds because they last years instead of having to change paper every time I change my boards. It is cost effective and time saving. Since I work at a private Christian school, I choose to include a verse of the month on my bulletin board. Therefore, I added Matthew 6:20-21, “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.” Also, since it is March and Woman’s History Month, I chose to post famous woman writers from all over the world with shamrocks and the phrase “March into Woman’s History”. It is a good reminder to my students that there are many successful woman writers, and the board may get them interested in reading one of the female writer’s novels.

Hola Adiós Coffee in Costa Mesa Review

Wednesday, February 24, 2021

The theming of this coffee shop is fantastic! I loved the Mexican serape materials used and the bright colors. Also, the hanging greenery made you feel like you were in a jungle. Inside, when there is not covid, there would be a bar with stools along the windows and walls. Outside, there is 4 two person tables on the side. There is also 2 two person tables in the front outside. It might be difficult for a large party to spend time here. The negatives I have for this shop would be that they only offer whole milk, oat milk, or almond milk. I prefer to save calories and get nonfat milk with my coffee. Also, I did not like their coffee flavor. I got a latte with oat milk and unsweetened. It was bitter to the point it was almost sour. It did have a cute foam design which went away as it traveled in my stroller cup holder to the table (so not pictured). I give it a 4 because the atmosphere and decor is awesome which makes up for the coffee I didn’t really enjoy. Also, it is on the way to Newport Beach, so the location is a pull. Hopefully, they offer more milk options in the future!
